Secrets in the open sea
  Libanon/USA 1997
Vuideotape, 3:20, colour, stereo

The expansiveness of the sea, still the largest part of the earth, conceals thoUSAnds of hidden secrets. Many mysteries remain unexplained because of the difficult access to 'the great salt water'. Man, the authority on dry land, can only manoeuvre, outside the territory that he has claimed. What puzzles must lie on the bed of the Mediterranean Sea just outside Lebanese territorial waters? Many questions raised during the civil war in that country remain unanswered or are only resolved many years later. The account of events in Ra'ad's short, suggestive video message indicates shady activities during the war, things which still require clarification. In the military intelligence head quarters, the Lebanese army finds a number of large blue photo negatives with group portraits of militias set up during the civil war. After taking possession of this material, a number of the images is studied by a Lebanese institute and then subjected to further inspection by an American research laboratory. It appears that it involves men and women who were politically active during their militia time and who somehow or other have disappeared without trace. They drowned, lost in the Mediterranean Sea. They can no longer give evidence. But as long as they exist in historical documents which come to light, their war in unfinished.
