Meridian:
  • imaginary circle across the surface of the earth that runs through a certain place and both poles and using which the location of that place can be established.
  • (acupunture) imaginary line across the body connecting well defined points.

Hooykaas and Stansfield investigate the correlation and borders between body and landscape in a poetic travelogue. The traveller is central, the observing subject, who, using observation instruments - the traveller frequently polishes her glasses - investigates the surrounding world. Strictly speaking she travels through places on either side of the meridian, from the Netherlands via Scotland to Iceland. In and between the images, however, a series of energy lines unfolds that connect and divide. From the fanciful pattern of lightning, via the lines in the palm of a hand, the veins in a leaf or in the human body, to a simple map - all seem determined by an individual rhythm, an individual pattern of lines that connect critical points. The parallels between man and the world, between inside and outside, cause the boundaries to fade and evoke an image of the meridian as characteristic for organic and inorganic nature.
