Identity in the widest sense of the word remains a co-ordinating theme for Nelson Henricks. Emission (1994, about male and female identity) and Shimmer (1995, about personal identity) looked in particular at the 'what': what identity has something or someone. Window tries to answer the 'how': how do we determine the identity of a person or a place, how do we really get to know it? One look is just not enough according to Henricks. Only by repeated observation and looking at and listening to all variations can we arrive at any understanding. For a whole year, Henricks occasionally filmed his window on the third floor. The seasons are all mixed together. We see the window, which has a clear view, from various camera angles, in daytime, at night, from a distance, from close by, looking down and straight forward. Fragmentary sentences which appear across these shots seem to be shreds of Henricks' thought processes. Images follow each other while we hear him slowly count from 30 back to one: the whole must be more that just the sum of its parts, more than all the images, Sounds and movements together. Once the countdown has finished, the result of that summation is blasted upon us.
