After his declaration of intent that it is an illusion that mankind is a 'one nation tribe', the voice of David Wojnarowicz (1954 - 1992) takes the viewer on a disturbing trip through the soft underbelly of American society. The writer, junk and whore (in random sequence) succumbed to the HIV virus which, considering his recollections, comes as no surprise. In his flexible account of his wanderings, he gives remarkable insight into his acceptance of his lot. He does not expect any sympathy or compassion from his fellow creatures. It's every man for himself and there is no God who watches over us all. His stories which sometimes echo in content, if not in style, the work of Charles Bukowski and William S. Burroughs are visualized through images of strippers, gay boys, the homeless, psychopaths, junks and other outcasts from the American dream. Using Wojnarowicz's texts (as the 80 minutes pass, more and more old friends prove to have succumbed to AIDS) the camera travels from Los Angeles the Sodom and Gomorrah of the western world to New Orleans. It is a metaphoric surrender to the landscape of the so called civilized world.
