Eia pop eia (Humpty Dumpty)
  Germany 1993
Videotape, 18:25, colour, mono
The Dutch expression 'Columbus' egg' ('just the thing') not only refers to ingenuity but also points to a rather too drastic solution to a problem. After all, Columbus smashed the egg on the table in order to prove that he could set it upright. Just as he sailed westward to India to prove that the earth was round, discovering America in passing and setting in motion the biggest genocide in American history. You could call that drastic, but you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. Veit Lup goes one step further than Columbus and presents the world as an easter egg with a God in a striped shirt who can stop the world, if it all gets too sordid for him. There is enough reason to do that, according to the makers of this production. They leave no symbol unused in the expression of their dissatisfaction. For example, gold is literally earned on the backs of the native population and a dented globe is used to show that environmental precautions are just stop gap measures. Since this is done with great irony and ingenuity, Eia pop eia/Humpty Dumpty is more than simple pamphletism. And why shouldn't we laugh at social criticism? 'Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall/Humpty Dumpty had a great fall/All the king's horses and all the king's men/Couldn't put Humpty together again.'
