Warum wir Frauen die Männer so lieben
  Belgium/UK 1993
Videotape, 5:25, colour, stereo
We now know why men are so besotted by technology since Stefaan Decostere wrestled with the question in 'Warum wir Männer die Technik so lieben' in 1985. A more fundamental problem - why women actually fall for men? - is considered by his countrywoman Herlinde Smet in this production. She shows a quartet of cumbersome dancers dressed in the big white underpants which have become the trademark of breakable female Belgian dancers. What, in Heaven's name, is the lure of this species which, at the least provocation beats its chest? Are not men in fact just primitive quadrupeds built to stamp around on their hands and feet in boggy clay? It's not all that bad, says Herlinde Smet, who presents a female specimen with two pair of boots on. Thanks Herlinde, that's enough." A severe Brit considers that his kind have been made to look foolish enough. "But I still got something to show" interjects the video maker, fruitlessly, after which the plug is implacably pulled out. The final word has not fallen. To be continued.
