Signal

Videotape, 2:58, colour and black-and-white, stereo
In an intriguing piece of fiction, Rynard draws comparisons between a visit to the optician and the use of semaphore codes. As a method of testing visual acuity, the recognition of steadily smaller letter on the wall at the opticians is as outdated as the flag signals of the semaphore man. 'Signal' suggests that the human body has been colonized by the visualization technology used for scientific and military purposes. The language, the vision and the individual limits to be established would be changed for ever by technology. The crystal clear images and the exaggerated stylization (for example the use of apparently warm colours) and the mathematically looking animations suggest however a clinical clarity that leaves nothing to chance. Could the signal not lose its signal function?
