L' Apocalypse selon Thérèsa
  Belgium 1993
Videotape, 25:51, colour, mono
Acquaintances of the Nyst family know what to expect: visually caressing scenes as illustration of an erudite story constructed with a bizarre Nystian logic. Simply the fact that this story of a future apocalypse was dedicated to Dr. Jean Marchal and Clint Eastwood, bien étonnés de se trouver ensemble, is an indication that a hyper idiosyncratic narrative will follow. The opening shot immediately provides highly expectant tension. A girl in a futuristic space watches a television screen on which a (identical?) girl reels back in a terrifyingly empty space until a gigantic, scaled hand breaks through the watery surface and pulls her down: a materialized dream, a schizophrenic protection mechanism, a simple horror trick, who can tell? About half way through, a woman in a red dress says ''Without mysteries, I feel as if I'm dying.'' This same woman earlier sketched the outlines of the Last Supper onto a white plastered wall, after which, naked, she hangs up white sheets while at the same time murmuring with conviction, ''La sexualité est magique, comme le cinéma''. Alliterations and allusions are the main spring, the 'raison d'ętre', for this magical parable in which several story lines run parallel and sometimes cross each other at intriguing intersections. Thus, the primary colour of destruction through a volcanic eruption also stands for the Sacred Heart, a snake shut up in a red oil drum or a forest fire that can't be put out. And thus a soldier, bleeding profusely after being shot down in a mountain stream, is found by a woman by the entrance to a sewer. After his recovery, they philosophize about the coming of Jesus from the mountains, the man who once had his feet washed by a whore.
