Two suits of armour on snails are pitted against each other. No winner emerges from the sabre rattling that follows, both are ready for the scrap heap. The discussion on the role of women in art, contested in 'Des histoires naturelles, deuxième épisode' (1988), also ended indecisively because the strutting culture snobs slowly changed into real cocks. In her typically laconic way, Gudrun von Maltzan comments on history: a linking up of feats of arms, the end of which is a long way off. But even saddening violence can provide the basic material for colourful art works. The final product of the metamorphosis that the suits of armour undergo in Von Maltzan's blender is a practical artist's palette. From swords to brushes instead of those eternal plough shares, is an initiative that deserves following.
