There are very few painters whose work is as musical in nature as that of Mondriaan. He preferred to describe his purest abstraction in musical terms and he gave his canvasses titles which referred back to music. In a subtle ensemble, this video shows, as it were, the coming into existence of five of Mondriaan's paintings. Kapuscinski wrote a musical piece in three parts: moderato, lento and boogie woogie that enters a rhythmic dialogue with a computer animation of lines and surfaces. Mondriaan's eternal search for geometrical balance is represented in each of the three parts. In the first part by horizontally and vertically moving lines, in the second part by a moving frame that tries out all kinds of cuttings from a larger surface. In the third part, the well known 'New York City I' and 'Broadway Boogie Woogie' occur through slipping coloured stripes in and out over which little squares move back and forth. For Mondriaan, reality in graphic art could only be presented through a balance of shape and colour. Using his synchronization of image and music, Kapuscinski has added a new dimension to this.
