  David Hall
TV Artworks
  UK 1993/94
Videotape, 6:50, colour, stereo
David Hall's 'TV Artworks' does not really belong in a video festival. Not that the work of this British graphic artist cannot stand up to criticism - on the contrary. Hall (1937) made 'TV Pieces' when most of his future colleagues were still discovering how to use crayons. But his favourite audience is the unsuspecting television viewer, not the festival visitor armed with a catalogue. In 1971, Hall attempted to disrupt the viewing habits of the Scottish living room by using seven so-called 'Interruptions'. He also contributed when Channel Four produced a similar surprise tactic in 1990 under the motto 'TV Interventions'. MTV uses the term 'Artbreaks' for the same principle. Hall accepted the challenge to develop six 'TV Artworks' of one minute specially for the video clip viewer who maintains that nothing surprises him. These pieces are not intended as declarations of art in their own right, they do not assume that privilege. They are gestures and foils within the predictable form of broadcast TV. They are a reaction to TV, yet they need TV, they depend on it.
