Transversum
  Finland 1993
Videotape, 19:58, colour and black-and-white, stereo
The theme runs as a thread through Marikki Hakola's work: the frustration and despair of the individual doomed to isolation, who cannot fulfil his heart-felt desire to fuse with another. In her videos, mankind keeps coming into conflict with his own contradictions. In 'Transversum', the theme is aggravated by the discrepancy between the way in which we present ourselves to others on the one hand and our real and deepest feelings on the other. The great difference between the interior and the exterior make true communication impossible, let alone fusion. The confusion and despair that this produces are even greater when the image that we have of ourselves does not tally with our true feelings: "(s)he hit me and it felt like a kiss. I didn't want to be that way. I felt completely rejected", says part of the text. Hakola based this production on a dance performance by Ismo-Pekka Heikinheimo, 'Come quickly for I'm seeing stars'. She processed this material and combined it with computer animation. This makes the choreography more abstract and a suggestive whole is created of body, coloured blocks and lines, text fragments and electronic music.
