  Bart Dijkman
Don't talk now
  Netherlands 1993
Videotape, 2:29, colour and black-and-white, stereo
Bart Dijkman stutters and, just like many other stutterers, he has had to put up with the good intentions of parents overcome with shame, dogmatic remedial teachers and obsessively cocksure therapists. The compulsiveness of their intentions usually does the stutterer no good. Dijkman can tell us about it, haltingly. The desire to say something is linked with fear. Breath sticks in your throat. 'Don't talk now' - with a nod to Nicolas Roegs terrifying film 'Don't look now' - covers all these elements with irony and a good deal of exaggeration to put things into perspective. A perhaps somewhat traumatic production for stutterers.
