"So sweetheart; where are you going on those pretty little legs? That is, if nothing gets between them" is one of the more friendly examples of the call of the sexually active man. In contrast to the rest of the animal world (where, after all, such undesired verbal intimacies do not exist), these expressions barely have the required effect. Logic plays no part in this: "When I feel at my most ugly, I get the most compliments", explains one of the women interviewed in 'Mating calls of Manhattan'. The title sounds like a scientific research and that is what it in fact is. All aspects of the calling and the called are dealt with in swift tempo which sketches an image of the use of language as a power force between the sexes. One of the experts does not mince his words: "Let's not forget the most obvious reason: men are simply primitive." A man called to answer the charge accepts it with penance. But Kristine Diekman digs deeper until she runs into the connection between sexual jargon and power. "Big words equal power equals big penises" is one of the kinder propositions. Men who feel kicked in their dicks by this, do not understand what women have to put up with on the streets.
