Circumnavigation
  France 1993
Videotape, 15:06, colour, stereo
A typical water ballet would be a good description of 'Circumnavigation'. Nicole and Norbert Corsino, who themselves come from Marseille, chose two harbour towns (Lisbon and Vigo) for the first half of this part of their project, in which a short ballet is performed. Water is not always prominently present: in the part that takes place in the Portuguese capital, the ubiquitous azulejos, the well known bright blue wall tiles, replace the sea as a background without any problem. In this series, choreographers/dancers Nicole and Norbert Corsino, who avoid the term 'video dance' ("we make 'fiction choréographiques'"), attempt to discover the specific dynamics and colour patterning of the towns involved. In 1992, Marseille, Triëst, Rotterdam and Riga were dealt with in the same way. A quick look at the globe shows that 'Circumnavigation' has enough possibilities to develop into a truly world-wide project as a sort of modern counterpart to Robert Cahen's video picture postcards.
