The island with striped sky
  USA 1993
Videotape, 10:50, colour, mono
If seeing fata morganas is caused by thirst, you can see them in a city as well as in the desert. 'The Island with Striped Sky' consists of reflections: but distorted ones in warped mirrors. Moving and rippling in rain puddles the illusion of a metropolis is captured on video. While the images taken in close-up show the bustle of people hurrying somewhere, running feet and wheels of cars and buses passing by, the musical score suggests calm and space, alternated with the sound of wind in the microphone. In this mirage water is a recurrent theme, reappearing as sea, as a rain puddle, as a river or merely as a sound. It would almost make you thirsty.
