The subject of this production is the body in the broadest sense of the word: the human, animal and technical body. We see a whole series of machines and tools as extensions of the human body flash past, ranging from an artistically controlled butterfly net up to and including advanced weapons like tanks and planes. Bender and Funicelli want to show the body as the seat of the identity and as a symbolic system with its own language which expresses itself in movements. Practically everything moves: marching soldiers, a butterfly, a dredger, hands. Movement is after all one of the most important characteristics of the body - without movement it is, or seems to be, dead. The title and music of 'The armed man' are based on a mediaeval battle song. Funicelli composed a variation on this song in seven parts which fits marvelously with the images. The armed man from the title keeps coming back: almost naked, sometimes with a sword, sometimes with sticks fighting against an invisible enemy.
