Goldfish memoirs
  UK 1993
Videotape, 25:41, colour, stereo
Some years ago, John Adams lost his memory for a while. Reacting to this suspended condition he imagined a totally new identity, including the memories to go with it. 'Goldfish memoirs' is based on the peculiar experience of amnesia. The video consists of two parts: a prologue and an introduction. In the prologue a number of people inform us about the brain and about memory. The introduction is not only a reconstruction of the weeks that preceded the loss of memory. It is also a kind of pre-reflection of the adoption of a new personality, of forgetting and the search for memories. The story is told by others through a series of photographs. They don't know the story, but they tell us their thoughts and associations when they see the snapshots. Inbetween a voice-over recounts to us what went on in the protagonist's thoughts. The whole episode is situated in a motel on the beach, where fishermen stand in the surf every day, angling for shreds of memories.
