Du hast kein Herz (You have no heart)
  Germany 1991
Videotape, 15:53, colour & black-and-white, stereo
This is the second part of a trilogy; the first part, 'Rauchnächte' was shown at the World Wide Video Festival 1990. A common denominator of both parts is language; as a 'translator' of emotions. To be sure, this can convert ideas into communication and thus make emotions known, but there is hardly any talk of transfer here because of the objective character of language. This failure is demonstrated by a man and a woman who, each for him or herself, talk about their relationship with each other. Here there is no question of a dialogue between the two. They overload, each for her or himself, each other with reproaches or despairingly ask themselves how it could have got this far. These monologues are illustrated now and then by objects that repeat in their own idiom what has been said. The images and the language together form a perfect composition, immaculately executed, in which this true 'perpetual motion machine' witnesses an idiosyncratic vision of the mystery of life.
