Videotape, 12:18, colour, mono
Structure and external appearance of 'Transfer' fit seamlessly together with the subject: how do people experience the idea of travelling in the (Paris) metro- This ten minute tape consists of twenty scenes, as if we were looking through a passing train to the opposite platform. The people in these shots answer our voyeurism with the usual empty glance of fellow passengers. Now and then we are struck by a detail that Melitopoulos most obligingly presents to us in slow motion or even freezes in close-up. When we suddenly realise that we are staring, the world moves on again with a shock in real time. She has also accentuated the recognisable feeling of alienation by electronically unravelling the shots, so that the coarse grained screen becomes a perfect superlative of the flickering fluorescent light. Although the subject is well known, no-one has ever made such an emblematic metro trip.
