Festival - You know the sound of saws sawing & hammers hammering

''You know the sound of saws sawing and hammers hammering.''
Every festival visitor who tries to cover the entire selectin or, by accident looks straight into the video beam, knows the effect of the opening images: three vague colour balls red, green and blue which light up rather faintly. After the tearjerker 'Billy' (1990), Bart Dijkman composed an ode to the despairing festival visitor who bravely works his/her way through the proffered material. Or is it possibly a clue to the vague selection criteria applied everywhere? ''Nothing is what it seems'', remarks an imploring voice ? already an open door. 'Festival' should in fact be a compulsory interval film at all video festivals, acting as a mouthwash to remove the nasty aftertaste of artistic kitsch. The illusion of infinity could well be known from now on as the Dijkman effect. And hammers hammering.
