  Jan Vromman
Omnium gallorum fortissime cantant Belgae
  Belgium 1989
Videotape, 5:57, colour, mono
The assignment was: in the space of five minutes to display the individuality of Belgium in music that is equally Belgian. An orchestra takes its place. In front of the musicians, a decor with typical Belgian attributes: a bag of french fries, Asterix, the Atomium, Suske and Wiske. The accompanying images consist of shots of a cafe in which people seems to be having a great time whilst enjoying a foaming glass of beer. Also, a vast number of interiors and exteriors of Belgian houses. Divided from each other in this way, these images produce, on the one hand, splendid still-lifes, and on the other, images full of subdued melancholy. Jan Vromman succeeds in producing an original piece of work within his allotted assignment which transcends the tourist cliché. This video was produced within the framework of the 'Time Code II' programme entitled 'Music Transfer'.
