Passe pas seul
  Germany 1988
Videotape, 4:03, colour, mono
What have Lorre and a plastic dog in common? Only a mechanical locomotive system. The question as to what is granted a longer life is left unconsidered. But you cannot make a little toy with cog wheels and a wind-up mechanism from a real dog. Not even if you give the animal a black cape (Batdog?) and something that looks like a cheese slicer. It still remains a real dog; just watch the yapper looking at the moon. Besides, an egg slicer is not a harp! What a dilemmas. But, in a state of mind of melancholy and desire, thoughts can take strange turns. 'Passe pas seul' is once more brilliant evidence of Bettina Gruber’s sense of atmosphere and her talent for showing details in apparently empty frames. All her work is characterised by a playful perfection - both in picture and in sound - and this production underlines this once more.
