  Jean-Luc Godard
Histoire(s) du cinéma, 1 & 2
  Switzerland 1989
Videotape, 91:57, black-and-white & colour, stereo
To put it crudely for once, Jean-Luc scratches his backside again, lights a fresh Havana and pushes off. Behind a 35 mm editing table, next to the bookcase or simply behind the typewriter, everywhere he finds inspiration to impart to us shreds of his erudition. This evening's subject sounds familiar to those who know his work and indeed he does not give us a beginners course. Although his 'Histoire(s) du cinéma' begins in a chronologically responsible way with quotations from the period of the silent films, he soon throws in anonymous shreds of images and cinematographic highlights. It is too much to summarise, almost too much to watch. He also fertilises his expose with references to literature and paintings. And finally his familiar letter games and paraphrases: "A film is A girl + A gun" and "Il faut rêver - make me a STAR". In part 1 he concentrates on Irving Thalberg, D.W. Griffith, the Kino pravda and death and hope in the Second World War. His thematic juxtaposition produces surprising comparisons. Part 2 deals principally with the elements wind, earth and sound; the cinema as journey and narrative.
