Mechanic & Angel
  Japan 1990
Videotape, 16:23, colour, stereo
With the minimum of technical equipment, a lot of buckled cardboard and the dedication of Buddhist monks, the trio Araki, Lee and Babata captured the battle between the angel of God Power® and the Japan Satan Club. This piece of cottage industry not only won a prize in the SCAN Videoart competition, but also delivers the missing link between strips and video games, two immensely popular genres in Japan. In accordance with good local tradition, 'Mechanic and Angel' contains a maximum dose of strip violence and the primary sexual characteristics are simply forgotten. Michelin man Mechanic, a cross between Baby Herman and a sumo wrestler, completely undressed, joins battle with the tremendous Japan Satan Club (motorised thanks to China), after two of its members shot an angel from the air in a most cowardly way. The exhausting samurai duel that follows takes place on less than two meters of freeway and is a must for everyone who misses the Thunderbirds and is not turned on by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
