Song of My Country: The Rhinegold
  Belgium 1986
Videotape, 86:36, colour
Rejected by the Rhine daughters the dwarf Alberich, a 'Nibelung', steals the Rhinegold, knowing that he will have power if he forges it into a television picture while scorning love. Two giants come to the gods to claim Freyja, goddess of love, as a reward for building Valhalla. Loki, the god of guile, manages to interest them in Alberich's television picture instead. Alberich puts a curse on the picture taken from him by the gods and one of the giants becomes its first victim. Finally the gods will fall from heaven. Just as Wagner's 'Das Rheingold' is only the introduction of his 'Der Ring der Nibelungen', 'The Rhinegold' is the introduction of 'Song of my Country'. The best invention of the Theys brothers is replacing Wagner's ring by a television picture. They should also be commended on the electronic withamorphosis of the actors into dwarfs or giants and their creative use of the colour bar as the rainbow to Valhalla. In the next installments Siegmund, Siegfried and Parsifal(!) will try to break the power of the picture.
