  José Szlam
José Szlam Presenta a José Szlam
  Chile 1985
Videotape, 26:50, colour
The prizes to be won range from a telephone call with José Szlam to a whole night with him, no less. The question though is what it is you have actually won, and the answer to this question is just what you have to know in order to land a prize: 'Just who is this José Szlam?' What sticks out a mile is that he does a terrific job in marketing himself as a product in this campaign. How he wants the public to see him is apparent from his narcissistic fantasies: daydreaming on his psychiatrist's couch, this maker of advertising films awards himself an Oscar. Because, according to his own testimony, only a soul scarred by an unhappychildhood is equipped to express the deepest yearnings of humanity, José Szlam probably gives the best picture of himself in his own advertisement spots. After all, the mothers in them never make mistakes; and that's how he'd have liked his own to be. At present however he feels more like some sort of a jelly.
