Following a 'Twilight Zone'-type intro, a mysterious voice announces an unorthodox story in the classic boy-meets-girl mould. As the ominous clouds slowly disperse, the magical withropolis Romance City unfolds in all its nocturnal charm of light and neon. In a cinema empty apart from themselves, and where 'Casablanca' and 'The Dambusters' mingle on the screen, a garage attendant meets a secretary. In the dream-world of the cinema, the two project their deepest desires onto the story and characters of the film: a melodramatic love-story set in war-time. Our identification with fiction in film, television and literature, is a strange but understandable phenomenon. In 'Romance City' the surprising transformation undergone by the main characters gives a new and slightly ironical interpretation to this kind of psychological escapism.
