  USA 1987
Videotape, 2:43, colour and black-and-white
An ordinary day in the life of a common or garden Mike. He seeks confirmation of his existence in habits typified by precision and uniformity. The alarm goes off. Mike checks his wrist-watch and establishes that nothing can go wrong on this splendid new day. But what to do? Coffee! "A meal in itself". Mike thinks in slogans and likes his name so much, which he has everywhere from his pyjamas to the appalling belt of his trousers, that he tries to derive his right to exist from it. Coffee, shave, dress... but then what? In full raiment, ready for an energetic day, Mike believes himself to be in a TV commercial. He hears a sultry female voice languidly calling his name. "Mike, Mike," and once again "Mike". He hears his name therefore he exists. Once again, weirdo Michael Smith has come up with a superb example of video dry humour, in which the stick-in-the-mud office clerk as much as the yuppies who actually populate the advertising world, come in for a dig.
