'...The Ascent of Man...'
  USA 1986-1987
Videotape, 20:25, colour and black-and-white
'Acts of Consumption' is the last part of the trilogy '...The Ascent of Man...', the first two parts of which - 'Silent Running' and 'Conditions of Mercy' - were shown during last year's World Wide Video Festival. In order to give a complete overview of the production, '...The Ascent of Man...' will now be shown as a whole. The fascinating ascent and probable fall of man are outlined by Salloum through an optimal use of excitingly edited film and television pictures. In 'Acts of Consumption', Salloum's humanist stance is directly opposed to the dominant ideologies imposed on humanity by scientific materialism. Salloum expresses his point of view forcefully and effectively by confronting the viewer with combinations of sounds and images that work directly on the emotions.
