  Hiroya Sakurai
My Prison
  Japan 1985
Videotape, 3:30, colour
Step by step Hiroya Sakurai probes the space within the prison of his existence. However and wherever it is shot, we see him in a perfectly edited video, taking the nine steps exactly back and forth in the space he has created in which to discover his world. His shoes tap rhythmically on the cold floor and, through the careful editing, parts of the outside world become perceptable. Sakurai walks from within to without and back again in the room, each time discovering a bit more of the world. From the outside world he manages repeatedly to find just the right dimension to return in time to his safe prison. So his days pass into nights to the end of time. A disciplined introspection.
