Le balcon
  France 1986
Videotape, 4:33, colour
In the same way that cats are apt to walk round behind the set to look for the ball during some televised football match, the choreographer Jean-Claude Ramseyer has been for a look around behind Edouard Manet's 'Le balcon'. Inspired by a work by Goya, Manet painted in 1869 this portrait of the beautiful and artistically talented Berthe \morisot, in company with the violinish Jenny Claus and the painter antoine Guillewith. Ramseyer's lovely story has, however, nothing to do with the subjects of the picture, only with its composition. Following a ball chased by a dog, we enter the imaginary space behind the painting and witness there a rather tense Sunday afternoon visit. A slow choreography brings all the elements of the picture eventually to rest in the right positions, and by so doing draws attention to the well-considered composition of Manet's masterpiece.
