'Diciembre' pictures the activities of a small Spanish village during the last month of the year set against impressions of the bleak landscape and its habitations. The religious feelings and activities of the villagers are brought into close focus. A nativity play with children as the shepherds is attractively portrayed and we also attend a church service in which the faithful kiss the knee of a plaster Christ-child. Rodríguez reports these events with great integrity. A Christ-legend is portrayed in an almost surrealist manner: a brass bedstead stands in a barren field; a small child sits in the bed; animals approach but do the child no harm. The whole production is soberly accompanied by Christmas carols sung with many variations by the inhabitants of the village.
