'Le Cirque' is the title of a painting by the French neo-impressionist artist Seurat (1859 - 1891), upon which Jean Rabate has based this production. The foreground of Seurat's painting shows part of a circus ring with an acrobat standing on the back of a white horse. In the middle of the ring are two elegant clowns, one in red and the other in a gold-coloured costume. The stillness of the audience seated on stands in the background forms a contrast with the dynamism of the circus.
