Hoping to replace disbelief, expressed only in rituals, by belief, the necromancer calls for the example of the martyrs to be followed. The weak of spirit will have to spill their blood in order to survive. Meanwhile representatives of all the hospitals are crowding around the battlefield to get hold of the spilled blood. The virus transmitted through the blood makes its host into a personification of the virus. The vampires are back, the living dead, the beast. The genitals have to be pierced with a pin to avert the danger. Oursler confronts us in his well known way with the frightening reaction of our civilisation to THE virus, in this grisly story full of archetypes, based on the film of the book. The basis of which is the myth created by the pursuit of immortality.
