Geisterfahrer - eine Utopische Kolportage
  Germany 1986
Videotape, 72:10, colour
'Geisterfahrer' outlines the history and current state of the socialist ideal. Our guide in this journey through time and German socialism is a fairground showman running a ghost-train. The theme is handled critically, but with the requisite degree of cynicism. The form chosen - with the comparisons drawn between the fairground and politics, and between the history of socialism and the ghost train - emphasises this. The question is what the socialists have really achieved. The historical facts point to the conclusion that, put briefly, socialism has been unable to live up to its promises and that left-wing politics has become increasingly isolated from the rest of society. Representatives of the radical wing of the Green party attempt to break down that isolation by means of direct action, but in order to do so have to sacrifice their parliamentary position. Today it seems practically impossible to put leftist ideals into practice. 'Geisterfahrer' focuses on the problem of how left-wing radicals should make their presence felt within the context of socialism as a whole.
