'Expectations' is a penetrating documentary about the lives of former steel-workers in Los Angeles, who have had to exchange their previously comfortable life-style for life on the dole since being made redundant by the disappearance of well-paid, if dangerous, work in heavy industry. They now depend for their daily bread on a food bank set up by fellow-sufferers in their former union headquarters. Through half a dozen portraits of voluntary workers and their clients at the food bank, we follow the recurring struggle of the unemployed to keep their heads above water. The food bank provides indispensable support to them. Its work is nevertheless viewed disparagingly by government support agencies and new ways have to be sought all the time to ensure the continued existence of the project.
