Wilhelm Reich - Viva Little Man
  Germany 1986-1987
Videotape, 129:06, colour
The German psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich who died in an American prison in 1957, is still a controversial figure. This is made quite clear in the first part of this documentary when average German citizens stammer that they want nothing to do with him. Another one remembers Reich's book on the function of the orgasm, but only members of his family and close co-workers can provide a really clear view. Reich connected psychoanalysis with Marxism and saw monogamy and the taboo on incest as the reasons for man's repressed sexuality. More remarkable was Reich's discovery of an organic form of energy, which he called 'orgon', which could cure cancer as well as having other beneficial effects. The American Food and Drug Administration condemned Reich's work following some rather disputed research. The qualification "quack" was used to deal with the Marxist, Reich, and his ideas on incest, of which he was also suspected. In this documentary Reich himself speaks through the animated contours of a 'little man'.
