In the Blink of an Eye... (Amphibian Dreams) "If I Could Fly I Would Fly"
  USA 1987
Videotape, 25:11, colour
This production has been realized in cooperation with Elizabeth Streb and her dance group. The series of dances that she performs are abstracted and placed in a new context by Mary Lucier. Lucier's version portrays man's attempt to free himself from earthly existence. The slow close-up shots of a leaping dancer suggest, through the light and shadow effects on his clothing, the reflection of the sun on water. These associations with nature are developed further as the production progresses. A dancer sits on a rock, encircled by the sea. The reflection on the water of her slowly moving body, gives her a supernatural appearance. The motion of the sun and sea are also shown in accelerated shots of ebb and flow and a disappearing shadow. These scenes do not distract from the dance but rather flow naturally from it. Finally the dancers appear to succeed in reaching higher spheres.
