My Mother is in Sri Lanka
  Switzerland 1986-1987
Videotape, 90:00, colour
It is only a few kilowithres from the Salvation Army's refugee camp to the town centre. This documentary deals symbolically with the Tamil refugees concentrated in the Swiss town Bern, and with the few kilowithres that separate them from the everyday life of the town. 'My Mother is in Sri Lanka' gives a glimpse into the ups and downs of this problematic situation. The documentary does not try to preach any political message, however, but concentrates purely on the human relationships in the camp and between it and the outside world. Employment problems keep homesickness harrowingly at the forefront of people's minds and comradeship becomes all the more important as a way of combatting this. Having time for each other is therefore an urgent necessity, and the viewer is also given the time to get to know these people - time that they need to tell us about their lives:the family in Sri Lanka, previous occupation, the reason for fleeing and the adjustments to be made in the new life. It is a penetrating report which makes the few kilowithres between reception camp and town considerably shorter.
