Point of Orientation
  Netherlands 1986
Videotape, 14:30, colour
A place can be defined at various different levels. This production shows the various aspects of looking for and finding a point of orientation. The use of maps - an abstract kind of orientation - is compared with the viewing of a mountain landscape, a concrete way of defining place. The concept of orientation is represented in both abstract and less abstract ways. The abstract approach is expressed for instance in a diamond pattern of fine, grey, lines that wave to and fro. On closer inspection, it turns out that this image is formed by a black and white shot of grass blowing in the wind, with the mirror image placed over the top of the original. Road maps, grassy landscapes, stroboscopic pictures of birds: these are recurring themes in 'Point of Orientation', all alternating with poetic stills of coastlines and mountains. With the camera-work characteristic of the Hooykaas/Stansfield partnership, 'Point of Orientation' breathes an atmosphere of fragile serenity.
