Storm and Stress
  USA 1986
Videotape, 47:56, colour and black-and-white
If humanity was once the victim of overwhelming forces of nature such as storms, tornados and fires, scientific research has now taught us how to summon up these forces and energy fields for ourselves. Hall shows how, as if it were a competition, we have taken up the challenge and now strive to employ the applications of this knowledge for the creation of our own power symbols. The awesome wind tunnels, satellite dishes and power stations are a majestic reflection of our behaviour in relation to the world about us. Gripped by the imposing spectacle of the elements, Hall does not hesitate to plunge into their midst in order to let us feel for ourselves what precisely we are about. No sea too high, no whirlwind too mighty, no lightning too charged but we are witnesses to its trail of disaster. The beauty, allure and persuasiveness of the tyranny of nature place our own industrialised behaviour in due perspective, but also reveal the reason for our compulsive quest for power and influence over nature.
