The Axis of Life
  Yugoslavia 1987
Videotape, 6:10, colour
Memories weigh heavy after so many years. The authorities have set up a new investigation into an old mystery. Two women find themselves up against the necessity of reviving painful memories, to enable themselves to present a joint front to the investigation. They are unable to agree on a story: the wounds are still too fresh and the memories too vivid for them to be able to accept the dull truth. Both women have been married during the war to the same man who, they say, was on the right side but put a foot wrong. He had to be got out of the way. The two women learnt from the enemy to turn matters around and so to give the man the impression they were traitors. He strangled his wife for the sake of his country, or so he thought. 'The Axis of Life' has not only an intriguing narrative structure, but also a particularly fascinating rhythm and use of colour, creating a very special sort of warmth in a story that can almost be termed a 'crime passionel'.
