The Smallest Particle
  USA 1987
Videotape, 8:03, colour
Our abiding impressions of journeys to distant lands are always made up of fragmentary images, a confusion of odd bits and pieces, a memory editing in which the proverbial scissors have been at work creating their own peculiar order. Instant 'cut ups', striking because of the number of details the traveller has quite unconsciously stored up. Ken Feingold has made video-recordings of his journeys to Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and India. In a editing lasting only eight minutes he provides the viewer's imagination with enough material to become completely absorbed in the images. And that is not all: 'The Smallest Particle' also hints at some sort of mysterious quest. The editing of images and sounds works as a sort of puzzle or riddle, where all the pieces are there, but the order they are in creates an illusion of disorientation. However appearances are deceptive.
