Brussels, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Triest, Hamburg, London. A trip, equally unnecessary as necessary and unavoidable, taking us from Paris to these cities by train or boat. A woman - called Hélène, naturally - and two men wander ahead of us and allow us the pleasureof being voyeurs in their footsteps. Guides in the tour through mazes are Artaud, Berg, Döblin, Joyce, Mahler, Paz and Schönberg, among others. The route was not planned in advance, since this might have meant that the trip came to an end before it was even started. The imagination of a blind person, unrestrained by reality, and the fantasies, not limited by the fear for life, of someone condemned to death, show us the way. Alain Bourges makes a separation within the frame by using two mediums totally different in texture and character: film and video. The two video-men follow the film-woman in film-cities; within easy reach and at the same time at an unbridgeable distance.
