With the working title 'Romance' we witness the shooting of a production which appears to have dance and travel as its theme. The process of rehearsals, the travel to and from the locations and the living and working rhythm of the ballet group now and then interrupted by commentary from a television presenter and his 'informed' guest; who although involved in the fictitious production seems to have completely disappeared after the editing. Basically 'Ex-Romance' is a framework in the form of a number of post-modern choreographies by Karole Armitage of music from a wide American tradition of Jazz, Pop and Latin. The shared life and loves of the ballet group is delightfully portrayed in the dance scenes in unusual locations such as airports, service stations, a luggage conveyor belt and the wings of an aeroplane. Whereas in the history of the film-musical ballet pieces at these types of locations fulfil a rather senseless function, in 'Ex-Romance' it is an imaginative manipulation of reality and fiction. Charles Atlas, the individualistic pioneer of the video-dance/dance-video once again delivers a brilliant two-fold interpretation with 'Ex-Romance'.
