In Hackney, London, racial violence is the order of the day. This documentary is notabie for its telling editing, and sophisticated graphics and visuals. It pushes our noses firmly into an increasingly outrageous series of manifestations of racism: ignoring people, insulting them, damaging property, and finally psysical attacks on individuals. The sigh that 'you can't choose your neighbours' can sometimes turn into a cry of despair. By ignoring complaints of racial violence, municipal authorities make themselves partly to blame for the absence of action against racism. Victims suffer the consequences. Hackney residents and town councillors have finally got together to set up a committee - supported by research information and training programmes for officials directly involved - which is committed to working on behalf of the victims and to making the area livable again. The final image shows that - in Hackney - life is still no rose-garden.
