The truth about the USSR
  Canada 1986
Videotape, 29:24, colour
Shea, as befits an American tourist, has brought back clandestine shots made during a trip to Russia. He shows here the sort of pictures of daily life you never usually see. A number of motifs link these images: conversations with and private performances by 'unauthorised' musicians, accompanied by appropriate extracts from the biography of Lenin; preparations for the great October parade in Moscow; a series of statistics about Russia and other Eastern Block countries. The video takes the form of a traditional documentary and the footage has no great technical quality. lts value should probably be seen therefore more in the content and the circumstances in which the recordings were made than in its external form. It's a nice touch of Shea's however, to end his tape with the irritating pips that warn viewers of Russian television to turn off their sets.
