The filming of science fiction is in most cases very much determined by the technicalities involved in creating a convincing impression of alien planets, bizarre extra-terrestrial life-forms, and the inevitable spectacular explosions. 'Le rêve du Phénix' proves that present-day video technics can also achieve this sort of thing reasonably convincingly. A rather sad-looking hero is finally led to his objective by a scantily-clad female native, after he has survived a duel, the death of a girl companion, the wreck of his spaceship and an attack by flying space-termites. This rather slight narrative nevertheless makes a refined use of these science-fiction clichés, with a particularly ingenious treatment of time-shifts.
