Seated alone at a table in a chic restaurant, a recently divorced middle-aged woman ponders in interior monologue on her new, independent existence. Her original feelings, alternating between discomfort and embarrassment on the one hand, and irritation on the other, at the indifference of the manager who takes unfair advantage of the situation, give way to an - at first shaky - self- respect. Despite all doubts, she does achieve growth in her single status. The prospect of a new life comfirms her in her vulnerable thoughts, until an unexpected turn of affairs breathes new life into her uncertainty. Old wounds are shown to be not yet healed. After this catharsis, old defeatist feelings seem to stand aside in the face of appropriate and deserved pride. Geraldine Page may look back with similar satisfaction on her memorable interpretation of the role.
